Where color comes to life
“We knew how to run a paint shop,” said Tom Evans (co-owner of Lebanon Paint & Decorating), “we just didn’t know how to go about buying one. So my partner to be, Shawn Hickey, and I called the Upper Valley Chapter of SCORE and, fortunately, John Manchester was assigned to our case. We had heard about SCORE, but we didn’t know the extent of the services they provide folks like us who want to purchase an existing business.”
With John’s assistance and experience, Tom and Shawn crafted a comprehensive business plan and subsequently purchased the business in October 2006. It had been operating under the name Main Street Paints, but the name was changed to Lebanon Paint & Decorating to give it a fresh start and be more reflective of what they had to offer.
“Shawn and I learned from our backgrounds in the paint business that it’s relatively recession proof,” said Tom. “And, so far, despite the obvious downturn in the economy, we are doing quite well. In fact, the paint business for 2009 which is about 60% contractors and 40% consumers is actually ahead of 2008 which was an excellent year for us.”
The shop also carries a full line of window treatment and wallpaper which represents about 30% of the stores business. Both Tom and Shawn are quite pleased with their success to date.
Combining their almost 40 years of experience with the same national paint manufacturer they knew what contractors and homeowners were looking for in the way of products and services. “Featuring Benjamin Moore paints makes a lot of sense,” said Tom. “Benjamin Moore is a high quality paint with excellent brand name recognition and their national advertising campaign literally drives customers into the local stores.”
According to SCORE Counselor John Manchester, “It’s been a pleasure working with Tom and Shawn. They knew what they wanted to accomplish and they knew their market and products.”
Both partners are residents of the Upper Valley and committed to running a successful business here. Actually, almost all of their business comes from within a 20-mile radius of the shop. Tom resides in Quechee with his wife Karen and daughters Kristen, 22, and Erin, 21. Shawn lives down the road in Claremont with his wife Linda and daughter Tess,16, and son Elijah, 12.

“It was a no-brainer to hook up with SCORE,” said Shawn. “Why not turn to experienced business professionals to guide you through some of the challenging aspects of purchasing and running a business especially when their services are free?”
